The rule: if it earned its weight across a year, it made the list.
- Needle & thread
- Rope (clothes line)
- Mini scissors (if not on your utility knife)
- Multi-tool / utility knife
- Cheap sunglasses
- Swimsuit
- 1–2 pairs of shorts
- 1 pair of trousers
- Headphones
- Water bottle
- Mini notepad & pen
- 1–2 books max — hostels have book exchanges
- Travel towel
- Cheap wedding rings — leave the real ones at home
- $100–$200 USD in emergency cash, buried deep in the pack
